What does D500 auto distortion correction do with RAW files?

What does D500 auto distortion correction do with RAW files?

Just put my 10-24mm on the D500 and took test shots with distortion correction off and on during shooting, saving RAW+JPG. The results are generally as expected (see below).

What surprises me is that RAW files appear corrected as well in the ViewNX-i software provided by Nikon. Do .NEF files really get corrected already during shooting or is this possibly some kind of meta data exploited by the viewer?
