The G9X I/II has a Scene mode called "Handheld Night Scene". I just wonder how that differs from the "HDR" Scene mode, or Exposure bracketing followed by HDR processing in a PC application?

"Handheld Night Scene" takes severals picutures with the same settings, "HDR" takes pictures with different settings, so that the brightness differs. After that, the camera produces a single picture out of them.

So what's the purpose of the "Handheld Night Scene" taking several pictures with the same setting, and combining that into a single picture? What is gained from that? Is the purpose e.g. to reduce the amount of noise, or something else?

It reduces noise, as these random pixels will not be at the same place.

And are there any drawbacks? E.g. possible motion blur, or something else?

You need a still scene for all these functions where the camera takes more than one shot.
