Hello!!
I had Canon Powershot G9 and I have it as reference. It has served me well (at least mostly) for the last 10 years but now I feel I want to replace it.
Why do you want to repalce it?
I have it as a referece for size/weight as well. Before that I had a EOS350D+kitlens and I hated it because of its bulkiness and heaviness and also no LCD-shooting. (LOL) But it did take nice photos.
I bought Powershot G7x Mark II by error, I thought by being Powershot G series it would be good and the seller said it is good, and having large sensor, good, large lens, good. Nice large opening.
(then I am not soo good at the technicals)
I usually use Av (Aperture priority) state, in low ISO in daylight, indoor, no tripod. That's how I work. What I take photos of is of products, in my case 30 cm (12 inches) tall dolls and sometimes smaller - macro photos. That's my main reason to buy.
Then if I can use it for outdoor photos too and touristy things too it is good, but not primary use and should not sacrifice the primary use.
G7x II was bad because I feel it produced too soft photos so I returned it.
The G7X II does not make soft photos. Maybe you used big apertures and the depth of what is sharp was too small for you? If that is the case, you will have bigger issues with the bigger sensor of the M series.
Someone suggested me to buy EOS M10 and 28 mm lens. But then I realized he might go by the reference of "super close macro" when I really need to be able to photograph from a distance of 50-70 cm to catch the entire doll, but also close up photos (detail shots) from closer range.
The 28mm lens can do anything from very close up macro to infinity distance.
I tried to find a lens that would work for me, but me being NOT tech-savvy I am a little unsure.
"Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM" has the advantage of being small.
But it is a bit wide angle, maybe not ideal for the type of images ("product shots") you want.
Will this combination work for me, or would you like to suggest something else, or even entirely another camera?
With your limited understanding of what a big sensor and bigger apertures will do, I feel you best get a G9 replacement instead of a EOS M series camera. which will be a frustrating and confusing experience, getting to grips with different lenses and limited FOV ranges.
Why not look at the G9X Mark II? And don't forget, with the aperture you control the depth of field, the bigger the f-number the smaller the aperture and the more everything looks "sharp"/in focus.
My photos I took with G9 and the main motif,

I sell doll clothes I make so that's why.
Thank you so much,
