The image was severely underexposed. One can try to "save" it by increasing brightness and lifting shadow when processing the raw (Canon CR2) file in ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) before further editing in Photoshop CS6. However, by increasing brightness and lifting shadow, one introduces a lot of noise -- this is a weakness of Canon raw data from Canon sensors.

The "recovered" image may look good, but a lot of details are lost. This may not matter if the image is downsampled (size reduced) for web sharing.
