Re: Lens consolidation - panoramic to replace ultra wide angle?

I love panoramas (check my gallery to see just how much...), but I would not want to replace a lens and do stitching if not absolutely necessary, mostly because of movement between shots as well as the additional setup required in scenes with foreground objects.

There is one scenario though where stitching has an advantage, and that is for high-resolution images: instead of taking a single shot with a 14mm lens, one could take several with a 90mm lens if the subject matter is appropriate. That is however a special application and, IMO, not a good reason to replace a lens with another one.

Instead, I would suggest you pare down your collection. Doubling FLs has been a good approach for a long time, but I think one could do at least tripling, if not more, say, 12, 35, 90mm should cover everything. Depending on the overall FL range you need, other series are conceivable. If you want IS, then that would limit your choices obviously.
