I don't think comparing the 24 STM to the 17-55 IS USM is entirely apples to apples.  $150 and 125 gm vs $829 and 625 gm are pretty different lens beyond zoom vs prime.  The 24 STM sure carries easily on my 70 D.  To be sure, then17-55 is arguably the best EFS lens Canon makes.  If I want faster I use my 50 F1.8 STM.  In combination, those two,primes are really a great, light weight, and cost effective pair of lenses.  I would kind of like the 17-55 though, and if Canon updates it or I catch a great refurb deal, it might end up in my bag.
