The D series lens is still being made new by Nikon, the AFS has long been discontinued. Parts availability for the D series should not be a problem for a long time, who knows on the S series lenses. We are now at a point where all those S lenses are 10 years old, many models known to go through focus motors, so I will no longer consider them in the used market.

I have had the D series for 10 years and while slow in focus compared to anything after it, the optics are quite good. I never worried about the AF/MF switch, I always left it in AF.

If I had to replace it I would skip the AFS and VRI versions in this range and go straight to VRII.
