What started out as a cry for help has ended in a wonderful journey of discovery. Thanks to one and all for your contributions.

I started with a rhetorical question in seeking a common denominator to colour handling and what has crystallised is the need to have a clear end to end work flow.

Going forward, I will now shoot in Raw, process in Prophoto16 bit colour space, convert to sRGB if and when needed and continue to allow Photoshop to manage colours in my printing. In the meantime I have installed dedicated paper profiles but i still need to do some work on matching my monitor to my prints.

I am still not decided on monitor calibration because the success of this is very dependent on my working ambient light. Hence I am sourcing a dedicated light source for illuminating my work space and for viewing my prints.

If anybody has any suggestions or recommendations please let me know.

One unexpected benefit of this thread has been the discovery of the selective colour adjustment layer in Photoshop. The fact that one can manipulate a single colour without impacting on other colours in the image has been a revelation to me. It offers great scope for correcting colour with both portraits and landscapes.

A special word of thanks to Donald L for pointing me in this direction. But Donald, I still can’t figure out how you manage to match your monitor screen to your prints. Perhaps you might shed more light on this manoeuver.
