Need some help in deciding an UWA for my Nikon D750.
I have a Tamron 15-30, it's opticall superb, but very heavy to carry around while traveling.
I've had the Rokinon 14mm in the past, again optically brilliant, but lots of post processing necessary to fix the distortion.
Been very keen to get my hands on the Irix 11m, the samples & the hype around the lens looks promising.
Not able to find this anywhere in stock. Do any of you know where can I get my hands on one, or when would it be in stock? Not much help offered on the website & even mailed them a couple of times, no response.
And to add, how's the Irix 15mm?

It was officially launched at the Photography Show last weekend. I picked one up on the Tuesday and so far am very impressed. They said it should be available from main retailers after the show - so far I see Camera World have it listed. Calumet were also selling it at the show, but it doesn't appear on their website yet.

Hi, I'm taking care of marketing the IRIX lenses in the UK. I'm not supposed to create sales type emails here (I hope thats okay Mr Moderator?) so search the web and you will find 5 dealers. The 11mm is due for shipment again soon and Pentax fit is available.

Any technical questions please send my way.

cheers,

Charles Woods.

Actually the Irix store has the 11mm available for order.

I ordered the blackstone yesterday night and while always the canon chipped version is displayed (check gold contacts below the lens) I'm pretty sure also the Nikon has it. The related tech specs says "aperture controlled via camera" this means it has electronic contacts, or so think I.

Got it today.

I only had a very few time to test it, however my first three impressions are:

1) This thing it's a solid brick and very well made. I got the Blackstone version, then everything from the metal box to the case to the lens itself exudes quality. The front lens is huge.

2) It's extremely wide. It's the first lens I know able to sweep a whole room from wall to wall horizontally on FF ( Tried on my F6 ) No idea about distortion. I had the 18 but this is much wider !

3) I took a few pics but it's clear also at f/8 CA is there on D500. A very easy one to correct yet it's probably the most apparent flaw I could notice (on a very specific high contrast area, to tell the truth)

You can see on the metal finish of my oven here .

The few images (original and corrected very very quickly I have at hands right now from D500, where it has an 16.5 mm equivalent fov) are here .

Tomorrow I'll go and exploit the national holiday to take a few pics with it in a PJ stile (or so I hope for) both with D500 and Nikon F6 with Ektar 100.

A few from today .

A couple more notes: 1) I like the colors, 2) if you're in favor of light, everything helps, but if you shoot backlit, consider dialing a +1.5 to +2.5 EV at least for a try. It's unbelievable how much light it takes from the sky, causing severe underexposure if you're not careful. Mostly brightened, some were already shot at +1.3 to +2.3 EV

Third: repetita juvant: pay attention to purple fringing, even at f/11. I forgot checking for it first and you can clearly see it in the top part of the goal and the branches in some shots.

Let us know how the corner performance is.

Ciao Antony

keep in mind on D500 the corners will (theoretically) look somehow better than on FF. As soon as the weather becomes sunnier and more "stable" I'll take a tripod and go out for some landscape. I think to know a couple of places that might look good with that kind of lens.

For this one I had to dial a +1.3 EV because of the huge amount of light the lens takes in anyway...

After 3 months, finally got mine, just in time for my vacation. I'll try to post a review either before or after my trip.

But early impressions:

- Great sharpness. Relatively low distortion for ultrawide. A tiny bit of CA fringing.

-Mostly exceptional build quality (the cheaper firefly) except that rear cap doesn't really screw on tightly, and the front cap doesn't always click on securely. The rest of the lens, exceptional build quality.

-Weight is reasonable for handholding.

-My lens "calibration" was off -- Focus dot was showing infinity past infinity. There is a slot to calibrate the lens, but I just used micro-adjust to line it up a bit better.

-In theory, markings are very helpful for showing the hyperfocal distance.. BUT... the markings seem to be in the wrong spot?? It is showing for F8, a hyperfocal distance of approximately 2 meters/about 5 feet. But based on the calculators I've seen, the hyperfocal distance should be less than 1 meter, less than 2 feet. Am I crazy??? Or did they mark the hyperfocal distance incorrectly??!?!?

Good to hear your positive first impressions! B&H said that mine will be shipping either tomorrow or after tomorrow. Can't wait to have it in my hands. I've been waiting since beginning of May, I believe. I also bought the Firefly version. Wanted something light and inexpensive since it's sort of a specialty lens. I'll be using it for paragliding and landscapes. My 18mm struggles to get the whole wing in at close proximity:

Quick comments and thoughts:

-WOW, 11mm is WIDE. I'm used to 14mm, but this takes it to a new ballgame. I really need to re-think how I compose.

- Lens is really really sharp in the center 2/3rds. But the far edges fall apart quickly. Even at F8, far edges are very soft, with more significant CA as well. I downloaded the Lightroom lens profile from Irix website. I actually think it hurts the image quite a bit. Uncorrect distortion really isn't that bad. But the lens profile really stretches the edges, which softens them pretty badly.

-Build quality is exceptional.

I finally received mine yesterday and have been playing with it around the house. This is my first manual lens so it takes some getting used to as far as focusing goes, but once I had it AF fine tuned, the focus indicator in the viewfinder is pretty accurate. It took a -10 AF fine tune value on both the D750 and D500.

My initial impression is that the lens is quite sharp and the fringing at the edges is very manageable even using Capture NX-D. I'll shoot with it tonight and will post.
