Panasonic restructures non profitable business

Would the very best 20mp sensor product sell well?

Bear in mind that Panasonic threw their best effort at the time into the GM series and GX8 and priced them accordingly and the market said "ouch! - too much".

So if they used the 20mp sensor the market RRP would be quite a lot higher. Therefore the enthusiasm for their present 16mp make-do products would be a whole lot less at the higher price that a 20mp sensor would dictate.

So they tried making the very best camera at a price they thought the market would bear and used a tricked up (cheaper) 16mp sensor to do this.

So it bears the stamp of floundering around trying to judge the market price and product specification that will hit the sweet spot.

Present management has probably been under pressure to increase market share for some time and at the same time finding that its R&D budget was under pressure.

It is easy for us armchair generals to busy ourselves telling Panasonic the solutions for their problems but not quite the same thing as the effort needed to change the direction of a battleship at full steam where todays decisions made on rubbery future predictions don't always play nicely.

Playing safe is not always what the market appreciates in the long run.

Think good old safe-staid Volvo - something that your mother was comfortable to drive.
