Actually, a hood is more than a sunshade

I disagree.

A hood can keep rain off your glass.

If your lens falls, a hood can deform, plastically (if metal) or ekastically (if rubber), to absorb some of the impact.

A hood lets your left hand steady your camera by clutching a pistol grip rather than shade your glass from the sun.

A hood can make you look like a serious photographer so your subjects do as you instruct or the gatekeeper lets you in.

Finally, a hood lets you dispense with a lens cap without worrying about fingerprints or schmutz.
