I think the take-away from that case is that in California, property releases are not required by law.

However, had the photographer obtained a property release, it is likely the property owners would not have felt strongly enough to take this to court. Property releases are about getting the owner to "feel" that it is OK for you to use the image. It is not generally a legal requirement.
