Kit lenses generally provide a good opportunity to save some money. Nevertheless you should not only ask if the lens is good for its price, but also if it's good for your needs.

The 18-140 f/3.5-5.6 is the best "one covers all" super zoom for DX according to DxOMark. If you narrow the zoom range, then there are other interesting options around for $300-$500 , like constant f/2.8 and higher resolution. For little more money you can even get the constant f/1.8 18-35mm, when heading for wide angle. See e.g.:
