battery life and camera function in very cold conditions

hi-

First post here. I'm a visual artist getting ready to go on a wilderness residency on an ice field.  I will not have access to power - will be tent camping - for 5 days in temps ranging from -25 to -40. I shoot a GF1 and will bring a Canon powershot as a back-up camera. Am looking for advice on how many batteries to bring, how best to keep them warm and functioning and keeping cameras warm and functioning. I plan to bring insulated bags to store camera and batteries. It was suggested that I use handwarmers in battery storage bags - wondering about whether this is sensible/safe? thx!

ANSWER:
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1
