Hello All!

Well, I am a little late posting to the Pany G85 Party - but glad to be a part of it, none-the-less!

There have been numerous wonderful examples of the capabilities of this often overlooked yet reasonably priced little gem of a camera - I am hoping, however, that my positive experience with it will encourage others to take a second look...or better yet; get a copy for themselves!

I received my copy of the G85 just as we were headed back on tour the first of November. Fortunately our work had us in the State of Florida for the month of December (woo-hoo :), so I took advantage of the location to go out on several nature photo-excursions with my beloved P/L 100-400mm attached to my new camera!

(If you missed the original Galleries I uploaded of my experience with the P/L 100-400mm from last year, you can be find here:

A bit of time has past, but I finally put together Galleries & uploaded to my SmugMug site images from my December birding in FL. The Galleries have (WAY too) many images in them; yet I had hoped to particularly show the camera & lens combo’s tracking capabilities for those who might be interested, so there are many photo-sequences.

Here is the new G85 + P/L 100-400mm Gallery:

Personally, I am quite pleased with how well the camera performed. Dual-IS was excellent, tracking/DFD has improved and the ergonomics were a dream! (Please note: these photos pre-date the new firmware update on the camera & lens - still happy though!)

Last year I shot the P/L 100-400 with the Pany GX8 & GH4 - and while I was very pleased with my images (especially the GX8’s) with that lens, I believe there have been slight improvements in most all areas on the G85. Certainly, compared to the GX8 (which I do like) the handling on the G85 is, for me, extremely superior. I love the intuitive controls, many customizable functions & brilliant touch screen...and especially when tracking flying birds, having the viewfinder centered over the lens (once again; for me) is essential to my photog experience. I am eager to try out the G85 this spring/summer during AirShow season!

:)

I would like to also add: the shutter on this camera is truly AMAZING! I can hardly believe that a mechanical shutter could be so quiet & unobtrusive!!! I was able recently to use the camera in a live concert & in a recording studio w/o needing to switch to silent-shutter! Wow. Good for quiet birding as well. It is a delight!

I must admit that I am on top of the pre-order list for a Panasonic GH5 and should be receiving mine within the next couple of weeks (hopefully ;). I am excited to see if Panasonic continues their up-tick-trend with their new flagship unit and to see how the sensor compares - yet I must repeat; I am quite pleased with this gem of a camera; the Panasonic G85!

Thanks for listening!

Cheers, LH

Fantastic images in those galleries, thanks for sharing!

How is your keeper rate when using c-af?

Great pictures! The two spoonbill photos are my favorites.

You make a good salesman for the G85.

nice birds. I took the opportunity to catch upon your last years aviation galleries, I'm still salivating.

Thank you for the kind comment!

As per AFC; I was impressed with the keeper rate on the G85 + 100-400 combo (even pre-firmware update!). I would say the rate was around 80% (mind, I did have some good light), which was delightful!

I also shoot Canon gear and can say, in my experience, that the newer Panasonic DFD (in good conditions that have contrast) is coming much closer to the tracking rate I get with my other equipment. IMHO, Canon does have one of the best Predictive-AF around - so that's good news for Panasonic!

It is a bit more challenging to swiftly lock onto a quick moving subject with the Pany in comparison to Canon, yet I have been pleased with these latest outings and can see an excellent evolution. Now on less active subjects in AFS - not much can beat the Panasonic acquisition!

I would also note that these days my all-around shooting experience with M43rds is superior to my other gear - ergonomics, weight, live-view, exposure, touch screen, et al! And I am happier with my keeper rate now, as well!

Thanks again. Cheers, LH

I liked them all but I was particularly impressed with the first two and the last one. In addition to nice compositions, you got very vibrant color. Did you shoot in Vivid mode? Did you do anything in particular inb PP to strengthen the color? I would love to hear -- so I can plagiarize! Oh, no, I meant "learn". LOL.

Beatiful pictures! I own the same combination, but am still learning to use it. Can you tell me something about the setting you use for BIF?

Thanks!

Henk

Man, the two of you are making me rethink my plans. I was going to sell my G85 and cough up the cash for an E-M1 mkII but the results you guys are getting make me suspect my less than perfect results are less camera related and more "me" related. Welldone.

Please do. I'd be interested as well.

Thanks Henk!

As per my AF settings for BIF, I usually use:

AFC

Center, medium-sized AF box, 3rd or 4th from smallest (if smallest is ‘1’ - using the front dial to enlarge).

Medium Speed Burst (With Live View)

Zoomed out a bit to acquire - then zoom in.

On planes and sometimes larger birds I might use a custom-multi, ’central pattern’ AF (looks like a diamond) or a center cross.

There are several excellent BIF shooters on this forum that can also give you advice, including the above mentioned Trevor Carpenter.

Hope that is helpful & clear.

Happy Shooting! LH

Thanks for sharing your settings! I hope they will help me (alongside a lot of practicing)

Nice shots! Love the last shot. Since G85 has no optical low-pass filter, did you have problem with moire on birds' fine feathers details?

Thanks!

Hi Victor44 -

Thanks!

Honestly, I am not sure. I have not looked for, nor noticed, if there has been a problem on the images from the G85 with moire in the bird's feathers. But please go ahead and have a good look at the images in my SmugMug Galleries, enlarge them and investigate. I would be interested in your thoughts.

Here is the GH4 link:

And here is the GH5 (which also has no AA filter) link:

Please let me know what you think!

Hi Loren,

Imaging- Resource G85 review shows G85 could occasionally produce moire on very finely detailed bird's feathers http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/panasonic-g85/panasonic-g85-field-test.htm (you can see the image sample in the review).

Your G85+100-400mm gallery shots are good, as well as GH5 gallery, I did not see moire. I guess moire only pops up occasionally as reported in Imaging-Resources.

I think I will go ahead with G85+Leica 100-400mm.

Your hummingbirds shots from GH5 are awesome!

Thanks!

Cheers, Victor
