Poll: are you new to SLR --- If no which brand

Um... what backward incompatibilities would these be?
I meant some people may try to use "digital" lenses on their film
bodies, not the other way round.

Try the new 18-55 lens on a film EOS and crunch!! Probably a
chipped mirror. Don't laugh, there will always be some idiot who
tries it then will probably try and sue Canon for the problem.
I understand they added an extra pin to the lens and lens mount: I presume this is done precisely to avoid this situation. IOW, I'm pretty sure Canon's done something either to physically prevent the lens being mounted on a non-EF-S camera, or prevent the shutter from tripping on one of them with the lens on (I assume the latter, since "extra pin" sounds like an electronic solution.) Also, they're not selling the lens separately.
Be aware I'm not here as a troll or to make criticism, I'm
genuinely interested in where Canon is headed with the 300D (price
looks right), but I have so much $$$ in Nikon gear I honestly have
to wait and see what their response is before I decide to do
anything about it. Maybe 4/3 System, maybe Nikon, maybe Canon,
maybe Pentax. I want something that works for me, brand loyalty is
not an issue.
I didn't assume you were a troll. It's just that the "incompatibility" line has been trotted out regularly, and there's very little to back it up.

And, if you already have an investment in Nikon gear, you would be pretty silly to switch to Canon -- the price difference between a 300D and a D100 wouldn't cover your loss, and the D100 is clearly a significantly better camera than the 300D (I'm talking handling and "shootability" here; image quality-wise I think the 300D will hold its own).

I understand they added an extra pin to the lens and lens mount:[snip]
Thanks for that info, I would have been a bit astonished if there wasn't some lockout feature. The real upset for me is that the big makers do rave on about "lens compatibility" and yet there's a huge range of non-compatible features in their lens ranges already, digital just adds a new area of confusion for someone in the future. Canon, Nikon and Pentax all have this feature of not all lenses with the brand identifiable mount will work or even sometimes fit on all bodies, forward or backward. That's why I said it would have been nice to go back to the drawing board like Olympus-Kodak-Fuji(?) did. Of course their effort will be swamped by Canon now, and also Nikon if they can respond at the right price.

To get the system that works for me I'm prepared to do any silly thing. Obviously now that Canon has announced the 300D then Nikon/Fuji will have to respond with something similar or lose spectacularly. So I should wait for that, or the 4/3 System to mature a bit. But in the final washup, I will keep the basics of a Nikon system just for B&W film to try and empty my freezer somehow eventually, and buy a totally separate digital system, any brand. That way I will have lenses that are meant for digital and should work better. As I do have my little Olympus outfit, bought to get used to the digital workflow, I can stagger on with that for some time yet before deciding on an SLR. I'm getting very nice A4 sized prints out of 3 megapixels, so 6 megapixels (even from a low-end SLR) will put me in heaven.

I'm glad the digital market is maturing at a much faster rate than I expected, that's good for me as I am not a spring chicken so want some useful years of digital photography before I shuffle off.

Starting with Kodak Retina, Nikon FTN, Kowa 6, Hasselblad C/M, Mamiya RB-67, Mamiya RB-67 Pro, Nikon FE, Hasselblads (C/M and ELM), Canon EOS A2, Pentax 67, Pentax 67II.

Then their is the rangefinders, TLR's, and field/view cameras, but their not SLR's.
