irony

Years ago I began with a Pentax K-x, and one of the drawbacks I eventually ran into was its inability to allow ISO to float while having shutter speed and aperture fixed. In other words, M mode was strictly manual in every sense of the word – auto ISO wasn’t an option. I came to learn that I needed to upgrade to a model with TAv mode to get that feature. Well when the K-3 was discontinued, I sold the K-x and grabbed a K-3 at a pretty good price. While I was at it, I also added a K-50 as a second body.

Now a year and a half later, I discovered something today that I hadn’t noticed before. In addition to having TAv mode, the K-50 actually has auto-ISO in M mode. A couple of days ago, it kept showing up as TAv mode on the display every time I turned the dial to M mode. I was shooting outside in pretty cold temps, so I just figured it had something to do with that. But it occurred to me today to check the ISO setting. And sure enough, it was set to auto. When I switched it to a specific value, it magically went back to M mode.

So the irony: now that I upgraded to a model with TAv mode, it really doesn’t need it because M mode has auto ISO on that model. And even more irony: the higher-end K-3 does not have auto-ISO in M mode.
