It's the lens, and it is standard operating procedure in principle, but varies in intensity / size depending on the lens and the aperture.

The triggering factor is high contrast and sharp edges. i.e. the dark tree branches against the bright sky.

If you visit photozone.de and look up various lenses, you'll see reports on this for each lens reviewed, and the Tamron is included in the reviewsin the Canon APS-C section.

And as people have observed, it can be minimized using software.

In the world of software, Adobe Photoshop Elements is inexpensive (in photoworld terms, at least) and works. No need for full-fledged Photoshop.
