My main reason for the grip is just to be able to continue shooting without interruption.

As such I don't really need the big battery and AAs suffice enough as you can shoot without the AA tray in the camera grip while you wait for a natural break in filming to be able to either change trays or change the AA batteries in the tray. I've been using the Pixel grip since last July and it's practically on the camera most of the time. No issues with battery drain or non working buttons or dials.

I'm sorry to hear the DTSE isn't working as planned.

Nikon grips should work as I've used them in the past but even those are not always flawless all the time. I've had Nikon grips with hair trigger shutter buttons and intermittent power connections. Sometimes it's just luck of the draw.
