Maybe you need to practice and learn when a D500 might need a little user input to get best results, just as the D300 or any other Nikon camera occasionally benefits from some user intervention..

Leonard, I suspect there is some truth to what you say - I definitely need to become much more familiar with the D500 and how it performs, particularly with this lens.  My experience so far,  regarding focus acquisition with my other lenses, has been  similar to/better than the D300.  Im confident that improvement with the 200 - 500 will come with time.
