All film era Sigma lenses will give a lens error on your 700D. It happens when the camera tries to close down the aperture, which can be when taking a photo or when closing down the aperture with the DOF preview button. The older lenses just are not exactly electrical signal compatible, the last DSLRs they did work on were the D60 and D30, I think.

The lenses will work fine on any film EOS SLR body still, though. And you can shoot them wide open on a DSLR.

The suggestion that some Sigma lenses van be updated is not valid anymore, Sigma stopped that service more than a decade ago as far as I know. But on a DSLR these two lenses anyway are not that hot, IQ wise. So just use them on a film SLR.

Interesting to know thanks - so the lenses may be alright on the EOS 620 if the battery drain problem gets resolved.

Yes, and on any other SLR body, like the cheap and light Rebel 2000/EOS 300 and such.
