When you require an ILC you have to specify which lenses.

If you don't, then a high end P&S is as capable and versatile as an entry level DSLR with its kit zoom.

But granted, my question is a bit OoT here.

Since a photography class is now in the mix with dslr required, one also needs to decide what lens to use..same as mirrorless/m4/3. That said, a entry level Nikon D3300 or Canon T5/T6 can be found at the $300. level. Fact I know where new, authorized dealer, Nikon D3300 kits can be had for $262. Excellent camera.
