Lens dropped

+1. Not really anything else to do. The repair might be more than it is worth--Canon repairs are pretty pricey these days.

What about the ski pants?! Probably better to take them off before "grinding" together...

In had a similar mishap a few years back (2009) while in Tuscany, It. I didn't secure tripod correctly and the rig fell EF-s 10-22mm lens firsts on the ancient tile floor. Busted pretty good. I sent it to Canon for repair, then they sent me an estimate for repair. $99 US then. A few days later a package arrived with a brand new version of the lens. Nice deal, I thought.

So if I were you I would first call Canon service, they will give you a job number, send it in and they will contact you with an estimate for repair. Decide then if you think the price is worth it.

And then let us know the result. It would be interesting to know if Canon Service is still s awesome as they were back then.

That's too bad, but I suggest you take look at Roger Cicala's (LensRental) teardown of the 24-70 Mk I and MkII. It's easy to see why the MkI is frequently maligned lens. It's very poorly constructed compared to the MkII. I doubt you would repair it once you see the article and read Roger's comments.

(It may just be one teardown article with comments and comparisons of both lenses.)

If something is "grinding", you're probably doing more damage. Better to get it fixed immediately rather than damaging it beyond repair.
