EOS M5 focus problem with 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM (original)

This is probably a fairly unique combination, but I am having trouble with the M5 not being able to focus my old 16-35mm f/2.8 USM L (mark I). It works fine throughout the wide end of the zoom range, but between ~32 and 35mm the camera focus hunts and then fails to acquire focus, even in bright light. Changing focus modes doesn’t help.

Anyone else have a similar problem with this lens or any other EF lenses on M5?

The same lens works fine on my M3 and all my other EF lenses work fine on the M5 (even my antique 80-200mm f/2.8 L).
