Re: What is the current equivalent to the G15 in it's day?

I think it is the G7X Mark II.

I got my G15, my first P&S camera, 4 years ago for a trip to the Swiss Alps and Lake Como. In my view, it's the Goldilocks of cameras--not too big and not too small. I wanted a compact camera, but anything smaller would disappear in my beefy hands. Six months later, the G16 came out with Wi-Fi and a new processor. I kept waiting for the G17.

When I finally realized the G17 was never coming, I turned my attention to the 1" sensor GX's and found the G7X Mark II, IMO a G15 with the top chopped off (to remove the viewfinder and hot shoe, 2 things I never used). It's the same length and thickness--give or take a mm here or there--but a full 15 mm shorter.  The other differences are all major upgrades--larger sensor, new processor, tilting screen, Wi-Fi, in-camera charging, and the best new feature of all--a touch screen that makes using the camera so much easier and more enjoyable. When traveling, I'm now down to the camera in it's case and a spare battery. No more wires to download pictures to my cellphone. No more charger (I use my cellphone charger.)

I think the tilting screen will help compensate for the missing viewfinder. When sun glare is a problem, simply drop the camera to waist level and extend the screen out 90 degrees, blocking the sun with your body. As for the missing hot shoe, I never liked taking flash pictures. Both cameras are great in low light. And with no hot shoe, an external flash is one more accessory I never have to lug around.

The jury is still out as to whether I'll get used to the slightly shorter form. There's less grip to hold onto. The proof will come when it gets its first field test in May---the Grand Circle Tour of the national parks in Northern Arizona and Southern Utah.

I've loved my G15, but I think I'll love the G7X II even more.
