Re: What is the best non-zipper case for the G7X mark II?

For the last 4 years, I've used the Canon DSC-5100 for my G15. It's stiff leather, a perfect fit, and with a magnetic snap, it opens easily and quickly and the camera slides out in half a second. It provides plenty of protection when the camera is jostling around inside my day pack until I'm ready to use it, at which time I take it out , throw the case back in the day pack and start shooting. The case has worn extremely well.

When I got the G7X Mark II a few weeks ago, I went looking for a new case. The Canon case supposedly meant for the Mark II is the DSC-5500. From the pictures, I didn't like the look of the "flap" on the left side. So on a whim, I tried putting the Mark II in my old 5100 and, except for the height, it fit perfectly. The Mark II is 1 mm shorter in length and 2 mm bigger in thickness, neither of which presented a problem. It's also 15 mm shorter in height, which leaves a large air gap between the top of the camera and the top of the case. I went to Walmart and got some 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of thin foam, cut them into strips and stacked about 7 or 8 of them at the bottom of the case. I cut the strips too big, then gradually trimmed them down so that they are snug enough to stay put. The camera now fits perfectly.

I don't shoot videos or RAW so I have no need for a spare SD card. I do carry a spare battery, but that goes in my day pack. However, the 5100 has a small sleeve on the inside of the top flap for an SD card, and I suppose one could cut in half the bottom 3 or 4 foam strips to make room for a spare battery.
