So are you an artist or a technician? Give us your take on this subject

whvick

That's a ridiculous dichotomy.

You can't be a successful artist without being a good technician and apart from shooting test charts, you can't be a good "technician", if that is the label you insist on putting on a photographer of documentary style, without being an artist.

OK. I am not sure I like my wording either.

Would the question be better phrased, "are you an artist or a documenter?"am 90% documentor and maybe 10% artist. People ask me to come to weddings to get all the pictures at the reception that the pro does not have time to get. No art to it. I just go from table to table getting pictures of the crowd and then more pictures of the reception activities. People are really appreciative that someone got pictures of relatives that they seldome see, etc. No art to it. Just my goofy smile, a camera, and flash and diffuser.

Is there anything wrong with being a good documenter? Nope. I am proud to give them good technically correct pictures.

I threw the question out to see how people envisioned themselves, and it has brought up some interesting thoughts. I was not trying to step on any toes.

That's an extremely civilized response, whvick! Okay, I see what you mean. But I bet you also put some composition into your wedding pix too. I've done that too -- but now avoid it like the plague.

Great thing about doing it today, though, is that you can just hand them a flash drive or SD card of pix rather than 3,685 prints!
