Nikon AF-S 70-300 1:4.5-5.6 G ED VR

I recently purcashed this lens on ebay in a 'working' condition. From the moment I put the lens on the camera I thought that the focus isn't working right. Especially at 300mm the focus is definitely blurred with coma. My previous version of this lens has been patched back together (thus the need of a replacement) but still manages a much sharper image at the same settings. I've posted two comparison images of the lenses on my Flickr account. https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikebrown666/32639697620/in/album-72157603898803058/

Anyone else run into such a variation in copies of the same lens? I'm concerned that I've got a non-working lens.

Shooting with the Nikon D500. I've not tried the focus fine tuning specifically for this 'out of focus' lens as I don't want to mess around with the focus on the one that currently works (for as long as my repair job lasts).
