Photos, File Format

I wonder if someone could explain the various file formats for saving on a pc. Until now I have just used a little point and shoot camera, and files were just saved as jpeg.

I have now got a Nikon B700 which means I can try a little more advanced techniques. I have heard that jpeg looses a little clarity each time it is opened??

I have Photoshop Elements 14 which I just use for very simple editing. But seen the option to save as Tiff, Png, Giff etc but do not understand the differences. I presume if a photo is saved as Photoshop format it can only be opened in Photoshop Elements Organiser? My photos are not in the Organiser part of the program.

Duplicate copies of photos are another problem I have. I make too many copies - too scared I will loose them! Is there an easy way to find them?

I have Windows 10 pc so wonder if there is another program I would be better off using?

Being an 'oap' just entering the digital age I find there are so many terms and options to understand.

Thank you in advance for any advise you can offer me.

Nikon Coolpix B700
