Dave has been trotting out those phony chart pics for years now, provided by a lab which wants to sell you a drum scan. He doesn't believe in film grain.

The limiting factor in film isn't the grain. It's the halation and irradiation -- light spreading sideways in the emulsion.

The big problem in those comparisons that Dave posts is the colour moire in the digital example. It might be better to use a monochrome digital camera for a critical comparison.

And you must use the same lens on both cameras. Comparisons must be made with large prints: you can't reasonably compare a digital copy from film with a direct digital image. Who knows what has been lost in the scanning process ?

As film has no pixels, any attempt to say how many Megapixels it has is arbitrary.

Anyway, the answer to the OP's question for same size recording media (say APS-C compared to half frame film) is "Years ago for resolution, but not yet for dynamic range".
