I had the SX40 and it was a very good camera. Moved on to the SX50 and it's also excellent all around camera, but the EVF is weak and not a fan of the control buttons layout..workable yes, but I find myself pressing the wrong buttons often if in a hurry.
If you don't need the focal length of the SX50, try (rent or borrow) the Panasonic FZ200. I absolutely love this camera: excellent EVF, constant F2.8 lens, excellent image quality, fast focus, very responsive with excellent ergonomics. If I need more length, the iAuto feature (digital past 26x to 48x) captures a image that's hard to distinguish from optical zoom. It's my favorite travel camera. Lots of well done youtube videos on the FZ200. I still own the Fuji HS30EXR (very good camera with 30x reach) and sold off my Panasonic FZ60 as it was not nearly as sharp as the FZ200 with the Leica branded lens vs Panasonic house brand. The new FZ70 will be released next month with upgraded EVF and 4K video, so it's one to watch if you need that long focal length. My sleeper camera/bang for the buck is my Kodak Pixpro AZ526 with 52X optical. While it has a entry level EVF and a bit pokey in operation, it has a very sharp lens and excellent Kodak colors. It's the same model as their AZ522. While it's not as fast as my FZ200, the Pixpro always nails the WB and quick focus. At the far end, it's not quite as sharp as the SX50, but anything under 800-900mm, it's tack sharp.
So if I had to choose to keep 2 power zoom cameras, I would go with the FZ200 and the Pixpro AZ526AZ522. I also have a M4/3 and dslr camera when I don't need a lot of reach. My Kodak Pixpro S-1 (M4/3) makes for a excellent hiking/backpacking camera if I don't want to carry my dslr and a big lens. Sorry for the long post.
