I have the 17-40 and like mine. I prefer the focal length range, and smaller light and weight compared to the 16-35F4 IS. I also prefer the lighter price. If I were buying today, I'd probably pay more for the better optics of the 16-35F4 IS.

I like my copy of the 17-40 enough to not "upgrade." If you are going to use the lens a great deal, the extra cost is certainly justified. I don't use an ultrawide enough to make me buy another. I find contrast and sharpness are excellent on the 17-40, but it can have some funky distortion in the corners at very wide settings. It is fine stopped down, and works well at large apertures.
