Things to consider when using Nikon Teleconverter w/ Nikon lenses

I'm aware of the obvious (reduced light traveling through a teleconverter, such as a 2.0x teleconverter decreasing light by about 2 stops) but was wondering about any other things I should be concerned about?

Some people claim that teleconverters also reduce IQ since the image is being sent through more pieces of glass.  I will be using a Nikon lens on a NIkon Teleconverter.  I'm just looking at options for my solar eclipse later this year, as renting a 800mm+ lens for a FF will cost me between $300-500 for 4 days.  I just wanted to see if the teleconverter route is any cheaper with approximately the same result.

I would be using either the 1.7x or the 2.0 version with, perhaps, a 400 or 500 mm lens.
