For food photography you may well find you don't need an ext tube. Try it on a plate at home but don't use too wide an aperture. At 16mm f4 - 5.6 or at 55mm f5.6 - f8. The closer the subject/focus distance the narrower the depth of field. DoF extends (roughly) 1/3 in front of the subject and 2/3rds behind so make your focus point about 1/3 into the subject, assuming a taking angle of about 45°.
