Diffraction with an apodization "iris"?

The sharp edge of the usual iris creates diffraction which softens the image, the more so as the proportion of edge to area increases, that is, as the aperture is decreased.

What happens to diffraction with the effectively edgeless iris of an apodization filter, such as in the Minolta/Sony 135mm STF lens?
