DIY lighting studio worth it?

I've recently found a passion for portrait and fashion photography, if nothing else but for fun.  I have a good space I can use for a studio but lack any equipment besides my cameras (I've been using bright white hiking headlamps for my lighting, which are better than expected, but not what I need!).  Have any of you tried to assemble a light studio out of individual pieces, especially those not necessarily meant for photography to keep the price down while maintaining quality?  It seems near any setup under $500 for at least 3 lights and some diffusion usually show up broken, or at least don't last long.
Does anyone have any ideas, examples, articles or resources for setting up my own light studio (again, not top end professional, just something to get me started on my own) without spending thousands?  As inexpensive as possible is key! I have some ideas but wanted to see if the community here has gone the distance before hand.

Thanks!
