I meant apart from using the buttons for AF lock which is locks the focus. I haven't noticed that the other options didn't anything on the screen. Maybe it's me not fully understanding what the various option do.
For example I don't understand why you will you want to press the AF on button to start auto focus instead of the shutter button which is to me seems the logical setup.
Focus and recompose, if you want to change the metering. With half press you focus and recompose and the fully press for the shot, but in the default metering was locked when you half pressed, so it metered a different scene than you shot, you may or may not want this. Of course on NX1 you can separate focus and metering location with the touch interface, but there are time I find that too slow when I'm in a hurry to get a perched bird before it flies off. The idea is to separate the focus and the metering steps.
Secondly, seamless switching from SAF to CAF in practice.
But, NX1 has a wonky BBAF implementation so it doesn't really work out...

and there are more. Basically, BBAF should stop focusing when released, but Samsung doesn't do that, which is a bit of an issue. There is the focus lock option, which will let you do as I described for separating focus and metering. Also, AF can't be removed from the shutter half press, so then it tries to focus again unless it was locked....
For myself on the NX1 I live with the half press on the shutter because of these issues, whereas I use BBAF on all my DSLRs.
