I have an old-FD (breech lock) 24/2.8 where the MFD focus stop seems to be broken. The focus itself is smooth, and stops at infinity correctly, but at the MFD end it binds a bit past .3m, rather than stopping hard there.

Anyone know how much of the lens needs to be disassembled to get to the MFD stop? I'd rather not disassemble more than is needed.

That would require the lens to be fully disassembled.  Sorry for the late reply btw.  It's possible that the original grease in the lens has dried and caked up or possibly debris have collected near the close focus stop.  There is also a chance that someone had it apart in the past and did not reassemble properly.  The barrels can be screwed to the inner elements by starting from more than one location (multiple thread design) but they are designed to land on the close focus stop from only one assembly clocking position.  This is why it's important to identify exactly where the body and inner body come apart for reassembly.  If that is not known (like what could be possible in your case) then the body will need to be assembled multiple times until the correct clocking is found.
