That was one of my considerations for staying with the 12-40. When hiking, you are not going to have the body and lens swinging from your neck and the best solution is a chest mounted bag like the Lowe Toploader. With the 12-100 the bag would need to be quite deep and would feel awkward and probably be somewhat problematic in bending down, for instance.
