I'm not at home and so can't look this up in the camera's manual. But I am sure this is a feature. Optical viewfinders are dark at night... Especially trying to take a photo of the milky way. Auto gain on the viewfinder is supposed to be better.
Also I THINK that feature can be disabled, but I'd have to check on that.

There is a setting for exposure preview on or off, but i tried it with both and it's the same thing. Both settings when in A mode, the screens auto gain themselves.
Try it again? It shouldn't like that.
- Lock Exposure (half press of shutter?) on a very bright object (outdoor),
- Hit Preview (the assigned fn key) twice entering the "Shtr Speed Effect = OFF" (actually means the Shutter Speed Effect = ON),
- Point your camera toward dark object (indoor), you should notice that the live view exposure condition would be kept (so would become dark) instead of automatic adjustment to a bright screen.
- Hit the Preview fn again or half press the shutter, the Preview would be cancelled and back to the normal live view.
So yes i assigned the preview function to a button and it indeed works, but it's not too practical IMO since it you have to repress every time you focus. They should have made it a toggle at least. I also confirmed that even in Manual mode, when i have the flash open it also reverts to the same auto gain feed.
Yes you are right. I overlooked the internal flash & M mode... Rarely use the combination for my every M43 camera...
Also have the same feeling as yours towards the way of implementation of the Preview (indeed it was created on the first day of M43 and has improved along the years). I wish Pany could add "Hold" to the feature like the way of AE/AF-L. It could reduce a lot of operational inconvenience.

"She's sticking needles in her skin
I turn with an ugly grin
Her canvas doesn't leave a lot to fantasy
But her peace of mind can't stay inside the lines
It's so confusing, the methods that she's using
She knows she shouldn't leave a mark that I can see
Will she ever find one million of a kind?
It's cold and lonely, but that's because she told me
Lost inside her dirty world,
No one hurts this pretty girl but her
Oh, she's beautiful
A little better than a man deserves
Oh, I'm not insane
Please tell me she won't change
Maybe I SHOULD LET HER GO
But ONLY WHEN SHE LOVES ME
How CAN I JUST LET HER GO?
Not UNTIL SHE LOVES ME."
