Bricked my out of warranty12-40 last year doing the same, took it to Olympus service center in Bangkok, they updated and unbricked it in the back room and return to me in half an hour, free of charges. Guess I was lucky.

But i would never attempt to update any lens by myself again.

It would be interesting to know what the did to recover it. Do they have a mFT dock like Sigma does? Or is there a maintenance mode in the camera that will allow a forced firmware update on a lens?

I really don't have a clue what they did, most probably they have a recovery method, maybe like you said maybe they have a mft lens dock or some diagnostic tools to do the job, it didn't take them very long, I waited in their lobby for less than half an hour while they worked on it.

It would great to know if there is a recovery mode available on the camera, for those of us who are thousands of miles from a service depot! Maybe you can ask next time?
