Fred Designer: Hey guys, I have a great idea, lets double the size of the program storage area to 512MB so that we can keep a second copy of the firmware in memory only to be used during update. The additional 256MB will only raise the cost of the Bill of Materials by $20 and just think how cool it will be?

Product Manager: Get lost Fred. You're fired.

Maybe 10+ years ago. Nowadays additional memory would cost perhaps $1, on a $1000+ lens. My 300mm Pro was sent to the regional service center, some 500 miles away, repaired, cleaned, returned - Olympus paid like $100 for just one bricked lens, because of some cheapskate manageror engineer who lives in the past, when memory was expensive;-)

Apparently my lens needs to be returned to Nottingham UK from where it goes to a repair facility in Portugal. I am hit for shipping costs. Olympus for manpower and admin costs. Seems daft for thr sake of a few additional mb of memory space... but then I guess it depends how often this happens.

Not the 30 minute, no-cost dream fix, but not the worst thing, either. I hope it goes smoothly and is back to you soon.
