Bricked my out of warranty12-40 last year doing the same, took it to Olympus service center in Bangkok, they updated and unbricked it in the back room and return to me in half an hour, free of charges. Guess I was lucky.

But i would never attempt to update any lens by myself again.

What a shame.

Shamed that I didn't get charged for the service?

It's a shame you won't permit yourself to take advantage of updated firmware. This is particularly unfortunate when one considers that Olympus has taken to releasing numerous firmware updates of late. Many of these don't just fix issues, but often add additional enhancements, features, and capabilities.
