Isn't that possible to have a simple approach to have a compact bios loader on the camera to search for system updates on the SD card root at the boot time and give an option to the user to flash if there is a valid update on the SD card root directory. (This will add a slight delay to the system startup process and I am not sure whether that would be a problem.) User or PC may copy the update to the SD card from the PC through USB link or SD card. There could be simple download software on the computer to download the correct update to the computer from Olympus site.

With one minor exception (no user choice), this is pretty much how the SD card update method works. If a properly identified file is located, the program space is re-flashed and the update is completed. The search for an update delay occurs each and every time the camera boots.
