Using car tires has become somewhat popular in the States. Our roads are long straight and boring. The car tire will last 35,000 miles and the bike tires only last about 8000.

The sidewall flexes in corners to keep tread on the ground. The contact patch size is determined by the tire pressure and remains constant in a turn. The coefficient of friction and not contact patch size is what is important. Modern motorcycle tires have dual compounds that have softer rubber on the sides for added grip. You really have to corner hard to take advantage of this.

The real downside is the wet traction because there isn't enough weight on the tire to keep it from hydroplaning. For this reason I will be changing the tire out for new Michelin commanders that have shown to provide very long service life.

Insurance will not pay if they find out you modified the motorcycle. However the last I checked there has not been any proof that car tires are not safe.

Didn't you know all SIgma shooters were crazy?:-)

They are, indeed:-)

but...

I really hate myself for being judgemental here but just imagine yourself riding on a road, not too dry, nor too wett. Maybe a little oil on the road... a child on its bike crosses the street and YOU, my dear fellow, have to make evasive manoeuvres to avoid collision with that child. Just think about that for a sec and than about you wanting to avoid spending a couple of dollars extra on the right tires. Let me assure you: you will not be able to avoid that child. Or dog or anyone! And I am not just talking about financial concequenses or insurance......

whats next? Second hand worn out brakes? They are likely to be cheaper as well.

Man, you drive a fantastic bike! This really sounds bad!
