Canon M5 - What You Love & What You Hate?
Jan 14, 2017
I've had my M5 for a little over a week now and it is easily the funnest camera I've ever used. Although it's mostly all positive things I have to say, there are a few negative. So to break it down:
Positive
- AF. I really love the dual pixel AF and its tracking. I feel like I get every little bit of IQ out of my lenses purely because of how accurate the AF is, despite my unsteady hands. Focus peaking is great too. Manual Focus is something I have never been confident at on my 6D but I have no hesitation at all on my M5.
- Size. It's not much larger than the M3 and doesn't feel noticeably heavier either. With the 22mm f2 attached, I can easily take it everywhere.
- Image Quality. The M5 definitely doesn't disappoint in this area either. I'm quite impressed by the image quality of the jpegs, I actually prefer them over my 6D's Jpegs. I only really use the RAW files but having the Jpegs are good for family photos that you want to keep but don't feel like editing.
- EVF. At first I did get a bit of a headache looking at the EVF but I enjoy using it now. I wouldn't say I prefer it over an OVF, but it is definitely useful.
Negative
- Image Review/Playback. This isn't a huge issue for me, but it can take quite some time for the images to load when trying to view them.
- Custom Function Settings Disappearing. Each time you remove the battery, the custom functions disappear. For example, when you add functions to the dial button then remove the battery, they will all reset to default.
- EVF. Although I do like the EVF, it is way too over saturated for my liking. I'm hoping this can potentially be fixed with a firmware update.
