Low light AF comparison of lenses
Jan 14, 2017
So some quick info, im in my 3rd (and final) life in MFT, owned a GX7 and GX8 in the past. Coming back this tme i got another GX7 as i knew i would like it and prices are super low now. As of now i have several lenses with adapters and the Sigma 60mmDN. I love the combo and have many great shots so far from it but have been looking at upgrading my body.
I originally wanted the GX85 for the advancements in IBIS, DFD, 4k, ect, but then i saw how close the EM10-II price was and figured it was a better overall buy. Then i saw the used EM-1 prices and there was no way i could buy the M10 instead. But as any photog worth his weight in memory cards knows, glass is probably more important than the body.
So considering i only have one AF'ing lens i should really be looking there first (plus my GX7 only had 600 shutter clicks upon delivery, darn near new). The one issue im having is low light AF, it isn't locking as quickly as i remember it before but then the other times i owned MFT, i also had a Panny kit lens, 20 1.7 and 42.5 1.7.
So long story short, i think a faster lens would help as it's simply more light hitting the sensor. But lens design can affect that too, so im wondering if anybody with experience can offer comparisons. Im looking at one of several lenses for my next purchase.
- Sigma 30 1.4DN
- Panasonic 25 1.7
- Olympus 25 1.8
- Olympus 45 1.8
- Panasonic 25 1.4
- Panasonic 42.5 1.7
I will most likely buy one of these listed as they are suitable for my living room size portraits, but lock speed in low light is important (my little ones dart around). Any experience with these in low light is appreciated or if you have other suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, it blows my [insert] mind!
These days, I never seem to get enough
