Wow....do you remember how you set up your camera for this shot?

I was using Anscochrome 500 - one of the fastest colour films at that time. One of its greatest qualities was its very low sensitivity to "reciprocity failure" (departure from linearity of the exposure versus luminance relation). It was probably the best colour emulsion for photography in low light conditions at the time. Some years earlier the first truly satisfactory colour images of astronomical objects were taken at the Mount Wilson and Palomar observatories using "Super Anscochrome" which then had the "extraordinary" sensitivity of 100 ASA....

In my case, I fixed my camera with its smc 28mm F3.5 screw-mount lens on the equatorial table of the telescope I was working with. The exposure was 10 minutes - the time it took for the photometric measurement of a star I was taking at that time.

The image above is a scan of the original slide (Nikon Super Coolscan 5000) done in 2009. Photoshop then allowed me to extract considerably more detail and contrast from the image than was possible by classical photographic enlargement.

The times they are a' changing .......
