Are you perhaps referring to John Szarkowski's The Photographer's Eye rather than Michael Freeman's The Photographer's Eye? The two have the same title, but they're very different books. It's been a while since I read my Freeman, but I don't recall any significant amount of -- if any -- historic information in there.
