12-24 f4 G Can't Autofocus -- How to Diagnose?

I've recently returned to my photography, and am really enjoying it. Three of my lenses are giving me good results, and I'm learning a bit from each of them. However, my WA lens is not keeping up: It seems that this lens, (or the D5100) cannot properly autofocus. It's the AF-S Nikkor 12-24 f/4 G ED DX.

Here is an example, taken in Aperture priority with dynamic mode AF:

I used the center AF point, on the nutcrackers. Nothing in the picture is sharp. With manual focus I can get sharp results sometimes, but all autofocus pictures share this (and worse) lack of clarity.

Do you have any recommendations on how I can identify the issue, and correct it? Thanks, in advance, for your help!
